The Music Students’ Service League (MSSL) provides a platform for students in grades 6–12 to use their musical skills for community benefit. To participate, students must be studying with a member teacher from the MTAC San Diego Branch. By participating, the students can:
- Perform for the Community: Play at senior retirement homes, local libraries, and other public venues.
- Earn Service Credits: Receive community service hours that may count toward volunteer community service requirements.
- Connect with Peers: Join a network of young musicians who share a passion for outreach and performance.
- Students performing in the MSSL San Diego Community Service Recitals must be students in school grades 6–12, who study with a current MTAC San Diego Branch teacher.
- The students’ performance level must equate with the repertoire and skills of MTAC Certificate of Merit, Levels 5 – 10.
- If the student does not participate in CM, the MTAC San Diego member-teacher must contact the MSSL Coordinator to provide a list of repertoire that the student can perform proficiently. The MSSL Coordinator will determine if the repertoire meets the standard.
- All instruments and voice are welcome. Instrumentalists and voice students who require piano accompaniment must provide their own accompanist.
- Repertoire must be CM level 5 or higher.
- The preferred length of the performance should be 5 minutes or less per entry.
- The selected piece must be WELL-PREPARED and WELL-POLISHED for a standard recital performance, but memory is not required.
- If the piece is not memorized, the original book or sheet music must be used for the performance. Photocopied music may be used to facilitate limited page turns only. For digitally downloaded music, proof of purchase must be provided at check-in for the recital. A student who arrives with photocopied music will not be allowed to perform in the event.
- The teacher must register student participants online on the MTAC San Diego website.
- Registration for an MSSL event will be available at mtacsandiego.org approximately 4-6 weeks prior to the date of performance.
- For each MSSL event, the enrollment limit will be announced before the registration opens. Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Registration will close once the enrollment limit, or the recital time limit is reached. The teacher whose student(s) did not secure a spot may contact the event coordinator to request to be on the waitlist.
- Each studio is limited to a maximum of three (3) participating students per event.
- The registration fee is $10 per student. This fee is non-refundable once the application is submitted.
- Students must be dressed in appropriate recital attire.
- Please remember that for most of the recitals, the audience will be senior residents, and their health is a major concern.
- Performers who are sick with a cold or the flu may NOT perform and are required to notify the MSSL Coordinator a minimum of 24 hours prior to the scheduled performance recital.
- A Community Service Certificate of volunteer hours will be awarded at the end of the recital to each performer.
